Our Petition to Parliament
Petition Request
That the House of Representatives inquire into the Reserve Bank providing financing towards significant infrastructure projects at zero, or near to zero interest rates.
Petition Reason
In 2022, the Infrastructure Commission estimated we need $31B/year to tackle current and future infrastructure challenges. We think interest, much of it potentially to foreign lenders, could double that cost. To us, Reserve Bank funding at zero or near-zero interest would save billions, fund far more infrastructure than otherwise possible and deliver lasting public assets. We feel this will boost productivity, support communities and provide long-term economic growth; precedents exist for this.
Direct Monetary Financing will allow us to build more AND free up money for other things
The Government’s own bank, the Reserve Bank, can directly finance some infrastructure through low or zero-interest loans. This will cut out the financial middlemen, lower our dependence on foreign lenders, and save taxpayers billions. We’ve done it before and we can do it again.
